Let’s Get Social: Did They Really Mean to Get Social or Not?

If you haven’t seen it already – where have you been? You don’t need to be in the marketing bizz to understand why this video is both awful and brilliant in equal measures.

The video was taken at the Social Media Marketing World convention earlier this month and features Mary McCoy, an Inbound Marketing Associate for Continuum, singing a song co-written by Phil Mershon who is the Director of Events for Social Media Examiner. The video is without exception the most cringe-worthy 5.15 minutes you’ll ever endure, but, much like picking a scab, you just can’t help yourself.

Here are a few sample lyrics from the song;

I’m showing you things you’ll like
Trying to get engagement
Here’s some photos from my life
My cat, my kids, some bacon
I’m hoping you’ll share my stuff
And tweet it to the world
If you help me grow my Klout,
I promise that I’ll share yours

If reading this made you want to vomit a little bit – imagine what watching the video will do to you. Whether it was always intended to be a joke or whether this was a seriously disastrous attempt at a genuine social media song it’s won on some level, because it’s been viewed nearly 500,000 times and the video has garnered over 1,000 comments on YouTube sparking (ahem) lively debate. It’s also been played on Radio 1.

So the song about social media and performed at a social media event went viral on social media. I think it’s safe to say that as horrific as it is, this video has proved a point and put two previously unknown social media bods on the map.
